1) what i'm using
Let the sperg posting begin. I picked up a 7th ed dark elf army (lacking all the 8th ed. rares) and am using that as my army basis. It has a huge range of core and (then and now) specials. Thus, I put together a list and am trying it out on people vastly better than I. Prior to getting this army I played a game with Ogre Kingdoms, one with Dark Elves, and one with an all cav Empire list. I spent a day writing up an army then got to play two games with it.
2) what I played
My army consisted of:
2 units of 5 Dark Riders with shield and xbow
3 units of 10 Darkshards (crosbowmen) with shield
28 executioners with flaming banner
2 units of 5 cold ones
5 harpies
3 repeating bolt throwers
Master on cold one with BSB and 1+ single armor save reroll
Sorcress lvl 2 with metal and ring of hotek
Dreadlord on cold with with ogre blade 1+ armor 4+ ward
Supreme Sorcress lvl 4 with dark (DE lore magic) 4+ ward
I went against dwarves. It was my first time so I'm going to get the names wrong
3 Cannons
Anvil
2 Stone throwers
Organ gun
2 units of 20(15)? great weapon melee units with thane
1 unit of 8 miners
Remainder was quarrelers and thunderers
3) battle summaries
Keep my noobness in mind, and I strive to be less noobie in my next matches.
Match 1:
He bunkers in the top right corner. From right to left on the back line: anvil, cannon, stone thrower, cannon, stone thrower, cannon. Below is what his setup looked like. Keep in mind I didnt' take a picture so I may be a bit off:
T C C T C A
s s msos s s m
w h w
T = Stone Thrower
C = Cannon
A = Anvil
o = organ gun
s = shooting
m = melee
w = wall
h = house
w = wall
I could write a long summary of how I don't remember unit names and don't have pictures so it would be confusing as all get out, OR I could just say what happened in general terms.
1) I had no magic. I got one major spell off but it got scrolled.
2) I had no wounds with shooting until the third round for 3 of his core shooting units. I then forgot to shoot my RBT on turn 5 (noobie problems)
3) I failed a second turn charge with both my cold ones and they got shot up by perfect flank shots leaving me with a dreadlord and a cold one by the time they got to his organ gun, and the other unit never made it (had bsb). Executioners got slowed by the anvil and they made it into combat with 7 executioners alive and my 2 sorcs.
4) Executioner unit charged lost combat and was overrun.
5) I made poor choices with the dark riders not reforming them to get to his anvil/stone thrower.
6) I placed harpies poorly keeping them out of combat until turn 3 vs his stone thrower (they won)
7) Bot of turn 5 he blew up 2 of his cannons, my dreadlord got into combat with one of his melee units after it reformed from overrunning my executioners
8) Turn 6 he killed a unit of darkshards with his miners from overrun on combat res. He brought them in turn 3 on the flank of the 2 darkshards
4) reflections
I placed very poorly, then lost some 60/40 charges on turn 2. Forgetting to shoot my RBT on turn 5 made me lose a unit of darkshards. I need to learn how to use fast cav properly so I can get them in his backfield. I also was content to get shooty against a dwarf army when I was the one moving and shooting through a forest on one end and wall on another. I placed my RBT very poorly so they were blocked from some of his war machines by terrain/shooting over cav.
Game 2 was the same list. This one went very very badly for me.
He did the bunker in the corner thing. I placed dark riders on a far flank to try and get around to his war machines. Harpies were to the right of the 2 units. Executioners far right facing his anvil. Cold ones to the left of the executioners. Second unit of cold ones with BSB and Dreadlord facing a cannon. Crossbowmen bunched up pointing at his cannons. RBT placed in the gaps with LOS at his cannons and more than 6 inches from eachother/friendlies so they get deleted and cause panic.
1) He got first turn. 1 Cannon shot got a RBT, second cannon hit my second RBT but didn't wound (rolled a 1), third cannon he went for a snipe on my bsb with a 6 away. Rolled a 6, sniping my bsb and another cold one, then bounced 10 to hit my third RBT and kill it. Stone throwers both drifted. I was out of range of his shooting. Anvil slowed my executioners. I moved up....
2)I moved up with less than stellar foresight (happens and will happen again). On my far left was diagonally facing his far left units in order dark riders, harpies, dark riders. He shot off my harpies, caused panic and both dark riders fled. He got a flank shot with a cannon on my Dreadlrod unit of cold ones ( I should have learned from the last 2 in the former game). He killed 4 leaving only the dreadlord. He panics. He aims a stone thower at some darkshards (not sure why). It drifts putting the hole over 2 cold ones. He kills 1. His crossbowmen put some shots into the cold ones killing 2 more (2 left). They panic. Remaining units do 7 wounds to executioners. I rally all my units. RBT and crossbows kill his organ gun.
3) He shoots at my dark riders and causes them to panic again (both). He then kills 21executioners and a sorc to finish off the unit. Suprme sorc lives with no wounds. He then lines up a cannon shot and snipes it. He misfires on his stone thorwer and it is out for a turn. He peppers my crossbow men a bit. A unit of dark riders die, and the other one panics again. Bot turn 3 (I know it's over at this point, but whatever play on). I move my crosbowmen up into a combination of wall, house and right behind both. They shoot at some stuff. I rally everything. I roll stupid on my right cold ones.
4) He takes out my rbt, kills my other unit of dark riders. Remembers to roll his miners onto the board. Kills a unit of crossbowmen. He slows my dreadlord. My turn I roll stupid on my right cold ones again and pretend my shooting can do something.
5) He kicks the crossbowmen out of the house then reforms to take on the crossbowmen behind the wall. Kills the cold ones. Slows my dreadlord. I am pretty much tabled.
6) He kills the unit that bumped out of the house, then kills the unit behind the wall. Dreadlord lives.
Dreadlord doens't make it to combat I call gg with only the dreadlord alive.
Reflections:
Was not happy with how the harpies did. I found the darkshards to be very effective and could hold their own well enough in melee. Dark Riders I didn't use very effectively. Executioners never made it, so it's hard to tell. Dark magic just doesn't seem to cut it. Spells don't pack enough oomph to do damage or rely on other spells. I could probably drop the shields off the crossbow men, save some points, and pick up something more dangerous with those points elsewhere.
Personal notes. I think setup was better the second time around, but I didn't plan ahead enough and did get a unit stuck where I didn't want it. It didn't matter in the end, but still something to take note of. After the top of turn 2 panics in the second game it was over. In the first game even though I placed poorly if I made the charges I think I could have made it a close game, but I did go first. Was a good learning experience, and will remove the harpies and play with my army list a bit. I need to take pictures for my write-ups.
TLDR: Game 1 I may have had a chance, but placement was poor and I didn't get into combat in time.
Game 2 Was over by bottom of turn 2 when all my cav panicked.
